They then analyzed associations between each outcome and napping, adjusting for sex, grade, school location, parental education, and nightly time in bed.... From each of 2,928 children, the researchers collected data about napping frequency and duration once the children hit Grades 4 through 6, as well as outcome data when they reached Grade 6, including psychological measures like grit and happiness and physical measures such as body mass index and glucose levels. They also asked teachers to provide behavioral and academic information about each student. They then analyzed associations between each outcome and napping, adjusting for sex, grade, school location, parental education, and nightly time in bed.Though the findings are correlational, the researchers say they may offer an alternative to the outcry from pediatricians and public health officials for later school start times. "The midday nap is easily implemented, and it costs nothing," says Liu, particularly if accompanied by a slightly later end to the day, to avoid cutting into educational time.Future directions could look at why, for example, children with better-educated parents nap more than children with less educated parents, or whether, by investigating the influence of culture and personality, nap interventions could be advanced on a global scale.Children who nap 30 to 60 minutes midday at least three times a week are happier, have more self-control and grit, and showcase fewer behavioral problems, according to new research. These children also have higher IQs and excel academically.

Naps Hinder Learning in Children With Down Syndrome | University of Arizona News

New research suggests that typically developing young children retain new information better after taking a nap, but the opposite is true in children with Down syndrome. A growing body of research has linked sleep with improved learning and memory consolidation in both children and adults. Yet, a new study done at the University of Arizona shows that napping may not be universally beneficial.Researchers found that while napping can help young, typically developing children learn, it may have the opposite effect in children with Down syndrome — a population in which memory difficulties and sleep disorders are common.Over the course of several home visits, the researchers tested the children's retention of the new words at varying intervals: five minutes after they'd learned the words; four hours after they'd learned the words and stayed awake; four hours after they'd learned the words and taken a nap shortly after learning them; and 24 hours later to test for long-term retention.Down syndrome is often accompanied by significant sleep challenges, including sleep apnea and difficulty transitioning between different sleep stages. In the current study, 44 percent of children with Down syndrome did not enter into REM sleep at all during their naps, while only about 6 percent of typically developing children failed to get to REM sleep.
